Our Commitment to Safety
Dear Bunny Ears Community,
I wanted to make you aware of a situation surrounding our former owner, Lois. Some of you may have heard already. On May 4th John Kim, husband (process of separation) of Lois was pictured at our studio during our grand opening tour event which was open to the public for 30 minutes. It was unknown to us at the time but he had been accused of sexual abuse and eventually convicted of battery. He was there because he was touring the space with his children-who were there to support their mother. Any children present were there along with their parents to tour the space. The event was supported by the Lincoln Square Chamber of Commerce and an excutive member was present. In addition the event was also attended by Alderman Matt Martin and Illinois State Representative Hoan Huynh. It is the only event that we've had like this and the last one we will have where we allow the general public in without signing up.
We were unaware that he had these convictions. We just want to assure you that John Kim has never had a role formally or informally at Bunny Ears Art House. He's never been involved with any classes, open art, workshops, camps, etc. Lois has tendered her resignation and she will no longer be owner, or have any role here. She will not be present for camp or anything else we offer. Jinny and Zak will be the sole owners and will continue running the studio.
We’re sorry if you've lost your confidence in the safety of our space. Our goal always was and is still to create an accepting space where kids are valued and safe. We are a mom and dad to 2 kids and Jinny is a long-time teacher. We created this space with our own children in mind and their safety and wellbeing have always been our top priority. Here's what we’re doing to make sure that Bunny Ears Art House is a safe space for the children and the community:
1. All owners, teachers and staff have gone through comprehensive background checks.
2. All owners, teachers and staff will go through additional child safety training within the next week.
3. During camp, doors will be locked from inside so that no one from outside will be able to walk in.
4. We will no longer have any events that allow general members of the public to walk in without an appointment.
5. We will never allow any parents in the studio to be unattended with other children.
All summer programming will go on as planned. We have a great staff whom I will introduce soon.
If there are any other safety measures that you'd like to see, we are open to conversation-via email or in-person.
